Summer, 2011 I had just turned 50 and I was looking for a pastime, something that would get me out in the wilds, something with a touch of the extreme; more importantly, something that would connect me to the transcendent . . .Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita mi ritrovai per una selva oscura, ché la diritta via era smarrita.

In the summer of 2011, Jonathan Walpole, Kirti Walpole and Jenny Johnson paddled a thousand miles down the west coast of Canada. Starting from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, they followed an exposed outer coast route down to Vancouver Island. From there they switched to the more protected, but still remote and spectacular, inside passage route.

We depend on our boats to keep us safe and secure on the water. Moreover, they represent significant investment(s). What can you do to keep your boat in tip-top shape?
Though we often forget it, or perhaps are not even aware of it, all kayaks we paddle are descended from boats used as platforms for hunting. Rather it was stalking seals, polar bear or even walruses, a kayak's purpose was to bring in the nutrients and resources to sustain life of hunting people.
Lumpy Waters is a yearly kayak gathering sponsored by Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe. It is held on the Oregon Coast at Pacific City. The event occurs in the fall and takes its name from the unsettled, but still manageable, state of the sea, which has usually just started to rise from its (relative) summer calm. Lumpy waters is one of the premier sea kayak gatherings on the West Coast

Icy January day at Netarts. I was still recovering from the flu. The world was deadly grey and the cold had sucked the light out of the sky.
Ever wonder how old dudes such as Christopher Crowhurst, Dubside and Cheri Perry maintain their amazing stretchiness despite fast approaching senescence? I don’t know about you, but I have found the relentless passage of time has made it a bit harder to both stay in shape as well as to […]
Mother Nature doesn’t hate us, Mother Nature doesn’t love us. When we get hurt playing outside, often it’s because we don’t understand how Mother operates. Since our desire in kayaking is to play hard under Mothers eyes, learn Mothers ways…by playing! Using balls, string, ropes, tables, and a lot of group interaction in a series of games, understand why the wind […]

What constitutes a perfect day on the water? Hard to say. Sometimes it is an epic survived, sometimes it is glass and stillness and silence. Sometimes it is the company we keep. Today was, if not perfect, very close. Beautiful Fall weather, an almost empty beach, swell and waves just […]
