Mother Nature doesn’t hate us, Mother Nature doesn’t love us. When we get hurt playing outside, often it’s because we don’t understand how Mother operates.
Since our desire in kayaking is to play hard under Mothers eyes, learn Mothers ways…by playing!
Using balls, string, ropes, tables, and a lot of group interaction in a series of games, understand why the wind force increases so rapidly compared to wind speed; why waves shoal and break and how a long period wave is dramatically different from a short period wave; why tides occur and why there are springs and neaps.
Be prepared to actively engage in this learning, there will be a lot of time getting up and out of your chair!
Class is taught by Karl Andersson.
Karl has been playing hard in many outdoor pursuits of dubious merit since a child. Rock climbing, ski mountaineering, backpacking, and finally kayaking and canoeing. One reason Karl no longer rock climbs but will still be involved in demanding kayaking situations, is remembering that when thing were at their most challenging in climbing, never did he remember laughing. If you’re out kayaking with Karl and he starts to giggle, get ready for a bumpy ride.
